Shakira Goes to Trial in Spain Over Alleged Tax Fraud
Shakira is facing jail time in Spain after a Spanish judge granted permission for the singer to stand trial on tax fraud accusations.
The judge ruled on Tuesday that prosecutors can proceed with the singer’s trial on six counts of tax fraud. Shakira is accused of failing to pay 14.5 million euros, or around $13.9 million, in taxes on income received between 2012 and 2014.
If she is found guilty of the allegations, prosecutors seek to obtain her an 8-year sentence and a heavy fine.
